Driving the Gibb River Road – Planning Tool

This is one part of our 3 part Gibb River Road Guide.  Check out the links below for more information on the other parts..

We also have a video showing our highlights..

We used the following information to help us plan our trip in September 2017, which are available to purchase.

1. The Gibb River and Kalumburu Roads Travellers Guide to the Inland Kimberley & Mitchell Plateau, compiled by the Derby Visitor Centre.

2. The Kimberly Australia Travel Guide

We would also suggest spending some time in Kunanarra and doing a tour on Lake Argyle and the same in Derby to do Horizontal Falls.

Top 5 Attractions: (In-order of location East to West)

  • Emma Gorge
  • El Questro Gorge
  • Manning Gorge
  • Dimond Gorge
  • Tunnel Creek

Best Restaurant: El Questro

Best Bar: Home Valley

Best Sunset: Mt Glemont Lookout (Charnley River)

Best Lookout: Banko Lookout (El Questro)

Best Hot Springs: Zebedee (El Questro)

Best Canoeing: Mornington Wilderness Park (Their bar and restaurant are pretty assume too)

For us next time we would like to do : Mitchell Falls and the Muja Track.

Check out our plan we had for the trip in the table below…

Campsite/Station Number of nights we stayed Attractions At campsite and en-routeNotes
El Questro3Emma Gorge
Zebede Hot Springs
El Questro Gorge
Pigeon Hole and Lookout (The Pigeon Hole was closed due to a Saltwater Crocodile)
Banko Lookout
Chamberlain Gorge
Champagne Springs
Moonshine Gorge
6km Saddleback Ridge walk or 4WD
We would stay at least 4 or 5 nights if you’re into hiking. If it’s the busy season book at private campsite. We missed out exploring Amalia Gorge 3.4km hike
Home Valley Station2Cockburn Lookout Trail
Wild Flower Walk
Mount Baldy Lookout
Sunset Lookout
Only need 1, unless relaxing at this beautiful site in the pool and restaurant/bar
Mt Elizabeth2Bindoola falls
Ellenbrae Station (Camping available here)
Warla Gorge Wunnumurra Gorge
Easily done with 1 night, pack-up, explore and head off in the late afternoon to stay at Manning gorge which will allow you to do Barnett River Gorge on the way  and  Galvans and Adcock gorge the next morning which we missed.
Charnley River Wilderness Camp2Donkey pools
Mt Glemont Lookout
Dillie Gorge
Lily Pools
Grevillea Gorge
Better earlier in the season, swimming holes had dried up in September.
Mornington Wilderness Camp3Sir John Gorge
Dimond Gorge
Annie’s Creek and woodland walk
Perfect amount of time.
Mt Hart2Bell Gorge (There is also National Park camping here at
Silent Grove)
Dolerite Gorge Barkers Pool Sunset Hill
This is a tired looking site. The owner is doing it up, so maybe check back in two years. It also, doesn’t have the big attractions other campsites have. We hadn’t planned to stay here originally, but due to bushfires at Winjana Gorge we camped for 2 nights.
Windjana Gorge0Tunnel Creek
Windjana Gorge
Due to the horse flies, we had a long day and camped at Derby. 1 day would be sufficient to do all the attractions.
